ComputerNetworks50(2006)2271–2285www.elsevier.com/locate/comnetHigh-performanceswitchingbasedonbufferedcrossbarfabricsLotfiMhamdia,*,MounirHamdib,ChristopherKachrisa,StephanWonga,StamatisVassiliadisaaComputerEngineeringLaboratory,DelftUniversityofTechnology,TheNetherlandsbDepartmentofComputerScience,TheHongKongUniversityofScienceandTechnology,ClearWaterBay,SaiKung,Kowloon,HongKongReceived28July2004;receivedinrevisedform29April2005;accepted1September2005Availableonline29September2005ResponsibleEditor:G.ParrAbstractAsbuffer-lesscrossbarschedulingalgorithmsreachtheirpracticallimitationsduetohigherportnumbersanddatarates,internallybufferedcrossbar(IBC)switcheshavegainedalotofinterestrecentlyduetotheirgreatpotentialinsolvingthecomplexityandscalabilityissuesfacedbytheirbuffer-lesspredecessors.TheIBCswitchingarchitecturecombinedwiththevirtualoutputqueueing(VOQ)architecturewasshown,throughdistributedschedulingalgorithms,tobeabletosus-tainthecurrentandexpectedincreasesinInternetthroughputrates.Duetothearchitecturalsimilaritybetweentheinputqueued(IQ)andIBCswitches,allthealgorithmsproposedforthelatterwerejustasimplemappingofearlieralgorithmsproposedfortheformer.Inthispaper,weproposeasetofschedulingschemesthatarepurelyadvocatedfortheVOQ/IBCswitcharchitecture.Wefirstaddresstheissueoftheinternalbuffersimportanceinthearbitrationprocess.Weproposeaweightedschedulingalgorithm,namedCriticalinternalBufferFirst(CBF),whichtakesfulladvantageoftheinternalbufferelementsandmakesitsdecisionexclusivelyontheinternalbufferinformation.Second,inordertosimplifytheschedulingschemeandmakeitpractical,weproposeaclassofschedulingalgorithms,namedCurrentArrivalFirst–PriorityRemoval(CAF–PRMV)thatuseprioritylevelsinsteadofweights.Wearguethattheinteraction,throughtheinternalbufferele-ment,betweentheinputandoutputschedulersisveryimportantindesigningsuchpracticalandhighlyscalableschemesfortheIBCswitchingarchitecture.Ourhardwareimplementation,inreconfigurablelogic,showsthatourCAF–PRMVclass
