外文原文SPACESYNTAXINARCHITECTURALDESIGNDesignisasophisticatedcognitiveactivity.Inarchitecture,thisactivitybeginsbygeneratinganabstractideaandcontinuesbytransformingittoconcretespatialformations.Whetheritiscalledas“image”(Alexander,1964),“primarygenerator”(Darke,1984),“conjecture”(Hillier,etal.,1984),“organisingprinciple”(Rowe,1987)orconcept(Lawson,2003)allreferstothesame:theideathatmakesanarchitecturaldesignuniqueordifferentfromallothers.Findingauniquewayinwhichspacesareformulatedtoreflecttheseideasconstitutesthenextstepofdesignactivity;inotherwordstofindawaytotransformtheseabstractideasintospatialformations.Bygeneratingdifferentproposalsandtestingthem,thearchitectconsolidateshis/herideasorre-definestheminordertogainsatisfiedspatialformations.Thispaperinvestigatestheresearchthemebyfocusingon:1.Designactivityitself,itsnatureandarchitecturaldesignprocess,2.Spacesyntaxitself,itsmainideaanditsroleinarchitecturalractice.Spacesyntaxistheoryofspaceandasetofanalytical,quantitativeanddescriptivetoolsforanalysingthespatialformationsindifferentforms:buildings,cities,interiorspacesorlandscapes(HillierandHanson,1984,Hillier,1996).Maininterestofspacesyntaxistherelationbetweenhumanbeingsandtheirinhabitedspaces.Itisbelievedthatdistinctivecharacteristicsofsocietiesexistwithinspatialsystems,andtheirknowledgeisconveyedthroughspaceitself,andthroughtheorganisationofspaces(DursunandSaglamer,2003).SpaceSyntaxcallsthisrelationalcharacteristicofspaceasconfigurationandproposedtheideathatitisthischaracteristicformsthehumanbehaviourthuscontainsthesocialknowledge.Theaimofspacesyntaxresearchistodevelopstrategiesofdescriptionforconfiguringinhabitedspacesinsuchawaythattheunderlyingsocialmeaningcanbeenunciated.Thisisturncanallowforsecondarytheoriesoroftenpracticalexplanationstobedevelopedregardingtheeffectsofspatialconfigurationonvarioussocialorculturalvariables.Arelatedthemeinspacesyntaxresearchistounderstandconfiguredspaceitself,particula
