英文开学典礼演讲NimenHao!andGoodmorning!IamdelightedtobewelcomingyoutoDukeKunshanUniversityonbehalfofthefaculty."Delighted?"Perhapsnottherightword.No,IfeelsomethingmoreakintowhattheancientGreekswouldlabeldeinos,afeelingassociatedwithhumanregardforthingstoostrangeordivineorcomplextocomprehend,awordthatconnotesagreatdealofrespect,evenreverence,andmorethanalittlebitofaweorevenfear.Weseethiswordinthefirsthalfofdino-saur,literallya"deinosreptile."InAmericanslang,theadjectivethatleapstomindisawesome,andsoperhapsIshouldbestsaythatIambothdelightedandawedtowelcomeyouonbehalfoftheDKUfaculty.Thisisanawesomeundertaking,andyes,notsounlikeadinosaur,largeandimpressive,somethingtorespect,evenreverence,hardtowrapyourmindaboutasabeing—andabitscarytoo.MynameisWilliamJohnson,andIamaProfessorofClassicalStudiesatDuke.ClassicsorClassicalStudiesintheWestmeansthestudyofancientculturesaroundtheMediterranean,andtheterm"Classics"impliesinparticularstudyoftheancientGreeksandRomansfromroughly800BCEthroughtoabout300CE.Iam,inparticular,ascholarofancientGreece--itslanguage,literature,history,andculture.ThetwomostcommonquestionsaboutDKUthatIgetasked—andIassumethesameistrueformyfacultycolleagues—are:(1)whyisDukeinterestedinstartingacampusinChina?(2)whyareyouinterestedinit?WhyDukeinChina?Answersofcoursewillbemanyandmultiformforsuchacomplexundertaking,buttendtocenteraroundissuesliketheimportanceofChinaontheworldstage,China'sburgeoningeconomy,itsinterestinfurtherdevelopmentinareaslikemanagement,science,health,togetherwithDuke'sstrengthinareaslikebusiness,scienceofallkinds,andglobalhealth.InmorevagueandgeneraltermsDKUcanbedescribedanextensionoftheglobalstrategythatDukenowembraces.Theseareallimportant.Butinmyview,amoreessentialanswercouldwellflowfromwhathappenedjustnow,inthesimpleactofmeintroducingmyself.Thinkaboutwhathappenedthere.Icouldnotassume,asIcouldinAmericaorEnglandorItalyorGermany,thatevenahighlyeducatedaudiencewouldknowwhat"Classics"or"ClassicalStudies"meant.Moreover,Ihadtopositionthisaswhatisclassica
