ConsumerSpendingRiseswithFactoryOutputRetailsalesroseinAprilfortheseventhstraightmonthasfactoryproductionsurged,offeringamorepromisingoutlookfortheeconomicrecoveryinthemonthsahead.TheCommerceDepartmentsaidFridaythatretailsalesrose0.4percentlastmonth,betterthaneconomistshadexpected.Thegainwaslessthanthe2.1percentgrowthinMarch.ButthatsurgewasboostedbyanearlyEasterholidayandautoincentives.Excludingautos,retailsalesclimbed0.4percentinApril,matchingexpectations.Consumerspending,whichiscloselywatchedbecauseitaccountsfor70percentofeconomicactivity,roseinthefirstthreemonthsofthisyearatthefastestpaceinthreeyears.Economistsarehopingthatbetternewsonemploymentwillbolsterspendingincomingmonths.AsecondreportFridayfromtheFederalReserveshowedindustrialproductionclimbed0.8percentinApril,betterthaneconomistsanticipated.Factories-thesinglebiggestsliceofindustrialactivity-ratchetedupproductionbyabrisk1percentforthesecondstraightmonth.Manufacturers,whohaveplayedaleadingroleinpoweringtherecovery,areboostingproductionbecausecompaniesarestartingtorestockdepletedinventories.AdiversegroupofmanufacturersreportedgainsinproductioninApril,includingmetalproductsandmachinery,appliances,furnitureandcarpeting,andchemicalsandplastics.“We’restartingthesecondquarteronaverypositivenote.Themanufacturingrecoveryisgettingmorediffusewith17of19majorsectorsincreasingproduction,”saidDavidHuether,chiefeconomistattheNationalAssociationofManufacturers.“Itlooksmoredurableanddeeper.”Separately,theCommerceDepartmentreportedFridaythatbusinessinventoriesgrewforathirdstraightmonthinMarch.Inventoriesincreased0.4percent,matchingexpectations.Totalbusinesssalesrose2.3percent,thebestshowinginfourmonthsandthesixthstraightgaininsales.Thetrendinretailsalesgainsisalsoanencouragingsignthattherecoverywillcontinue.Butanalystscautionedthereboundwillnotbeasstrongaspreviousperiodsbecauseofanumberofadversefactorsweighingonhouseholds.“Thedecentgainsinpayrollemploymentinrecentmonthshaveimprovedtheoutlookforspending,”saidPaulDal
