2010MineralsYearbookALUMINUM[ADVANCERELEASE]U.S.DepartmentoftheInteriorSeptember2011U.S.GeologicalSurveyALUMINUMByE.LeeBrayDomesticsurveydataandtableswerepreparedbyGlennJ.Wallace,statisticalassistant,andtheworldproductiontablewaspreparedbyLisaD.Miller,internationaldatacoordinator.During2010,domesticprimarysmeltersproduced1.73330,000tinNorway,75,000tinVenezuela,67,000tinCanada,millionmetrictons(Mt)ofaluminummetal,thesameasinand67,000tintheUnitedKingdom,asoldersmelterswere2009,valuedat$3.98billion,31%morethanthevalueoftheclosed,anddroughtslimitedhydroelectricpowerinsomeproductionin2009.Atyearend,fivecompanieswereoperatinglocations.TheUnitedStatesremainedthe5thleadingproducernineprimaryaluminumsmeltersinsevenStates.Smeltersofprimaryaluminum.eastoftheMississippiRiveraccountedforabout71%oftheproduction.AnadditionalfivesmeltersweretemporarilyProductionidle.TwoothersmeltersthathadbeentemporarilyidlewerePrimary.—InJune,AlcoaInc.(Pittsburgh,PA)andworkerspermanentlyclosed.About56%[1.78millionmetrictonsperrepresentedbytheUnitedSteelworkers(USW)unionratifiedyear(Mt/yr)]ofdomesticprimaryaluminumsmeltingcapacitya4-yearcontractthataddressedissuessuchashealthcare,pay(table2),includingidlepotlinesatoperatingsmelters,wasnotincreases,andworkplaceflexibility.Thecontractcovered5,400beingused.hourlyworkersat10locationsintheUnitedStates,includingAluminumrecoveredfrompurchasedscrapwasessentially6primarysmeltersatAlcoa,TN;Massena,NY(2);Rockdale,unchangedat2.8Mt.Ofthisrecoveredmetal,55%camefromTX;Wenatchee,WA;andWarrick,IN.Theprevious4-yearnew(manufacturing)scrap,and45%camefromold(discardedcontracthadexpiredMay31,andworkhadcontinuedwithoutaluminumproducts)scrap.Aluminumusedbeveragecansinterruptionatalllocationsduringthenegotiations(AlcoaInc.,(UBCs)accountedfor48%ofthereportedoldscrapconsumed2010b).in2010and21%oftotalscrapconsumed.InApril,AlcoaannouncedthatthetemporaryclosuresofApparentconsumptionofaluminumincreasedby4%theBadin,NC,andFrederick,MD,smelter
