是insearchof还是insearchfor?人教社出版的SEFCTeacher’sBookIIAp.121上有这样一个词组insearchfor/of“搜寻、寻找”。笔者认为insearchfor这一词组的说法不妥。张道真编写的《现代英语用法词典》p.1255上说明search用于insearchof并且有以下例句：Soheraninsearchofher.Theystartedoffatonceinsearchofthemissingchild.Theboyswentinsearchofsomethingtoeat.《现代高级英汉双解词典》p.975也有此说法：goinsearchofamissingchild。在前几年的高考说明书上有insearchfor这一词组，但最近两年没有insearchfor而只有insearchof了。但在下列情况下search可与for连用：当search作动词使用时，可用searchfor,例如：ImustsearchforthatlostmoneyuntilIfoundit.2.当search前有限定词修饰时，如：SEFCBookIIALesson19中的句子:(1)Sofar,theyhavebeenunluckyintheirsearchforgoldandhavenomoneyatall.(2)Theyneverlosthopeintheirsearchforthemissingchild.《现代高级英汉双解词典》p.975上也有：asearchforamissingaircraftmakeasearchforacontraband3.当search出现在joinsb.insomething这一词组中时，例如：Heonedusinsearchforanewwayofincreasingproduction.又如：老高中课本第三册Lessonone中有这样一个句子：……andjoinedherinhersearchforthisunknownradiation.又：人教出版的SEFCBookIIALesson6p.8最后一段中有这样一句：Justunderathirdofthepopulationnowsmokes,about17millionpeople.笔者认为：smokes应改为smoke。因为此句的主语是population意义为：“人、人口”。当population作“人、人口”时，看成复数，谓语动词用复数；当population作“人口数”时看成单数，谓语动词用单数。此句是三分之一的人吸烟，而不是三分之一的人口数吸烟，所以smokes应改为smoke。在本页上，第一个句子也能说明这个问题，此句为：Atpresentabout38%oftheChinesepopulationsmoke。又如：WhatisthepopulationofChina?80%ofthepoplationofChinaarepeasants.在SEFCBokIIAp.38第二段中有这样一个句子：ThepopulationofChinaisabout29millionandthecapitalisOttawa.（1999年8月发表于《中学英语教学参考》）
