Whyareyouagain?Amanwalksintothefrontdoorofabar.Heisobviouslydrunk.Afterseatinghimselfbyatable,heasksthewaiterforadrink.Thewaiterpolitelyinformsthemanthatitappearshehasalreadyhadplentyofdrink.,andhewillnotservehimanymore.Thefrunkenmanissurprisedandabgry,andthenhestandsupsoftlyandwalksoutofthefrontdoorslowly.Fiveminuteslater,thedrunkenmanwalksinsidethesamebarfromthesidedoorandasksforadrinkagain.Thenthewaitercomesoverand,stillpolitely---butmorefirmly,refusedtoservehim.Thewaiteraskswhetherheshouldcalllataxiforhim.Thedrunkenmanlooksatthewaiterforamomentwithgreatsurprise,andshowshimselfbackoutofthesidedoor,allthewhilecomplainingandshakinghishead.Threeminuteslater,thesamedrunkburstsinthroughthebackdoorofthebar.Hebendsoveratableandordersadrinkinalowvoice.Thewaitercomesoverandremindsthemanthatheisclearlytoodrunktobeservedanydrinks,andtellshimthatheintendstocallapolicemanimmediately.Thesurpriseddrunklooksatthewaiter,andcriesout.“Man!Howmanybarsdoyouworkat?”PassagetwoHerearesometablemannersforatypicaldinnerinU.S.families.Trytofollowthem.Waitforotherstostarteating.Manyfamilieswillprayfirst.Placeyournapkininyourlapassoonasyouareseated.Whenfoodispassedtoyou,say,“Thankyou!”Don’tputmorefoodonyourforkorspoonthanyoucaneatitinonebite.Cutyourmeatwithyourknife.Keepthetableandtableclothascleanaspossible.Thingsthatarenoteaten,likebones,shouldbeputonyourplate.Donottalkwithfoodinyourmouth!Waituntilyouhaveswallowedeverythingbeforetalking.Donotreachacrossthetableorinfrontofsomeonetogetsomething---thatisrude.Askthentopassittoyou.Ifyouneedtoleavethetabletogotothebathroomordosomething,say,“Excusemeforamoment,please.”Ifyourhostesswantstoserveyoubutyoudon’twanttoeatit,say,“Thankyou.Itlooksverygood,butI’mnotquiteusedtoAmericanfoodyet.Maybenexttime,thanks.”Watchhowfastothersareeating.Trynottobetooslowortoofast---keepupwiththeirpace.Whenyouhavefinishedeating,say,“Whatadeliciousmeal!Thankyousomuch.”Waitforalltobefinishedbeforeleavingthetable.
