帮助孩子阅读学习英语的文章帮助孩子阅读学习英语的文章LearningtoReadinSafalibaHelpsGhanaianKidsLearnEnglishFromVOALearningEnglish,thisistheEducationReport.Ghana'sofficialnationallanguageisEnglish.ButformostcitizensEnglishisalsoasecondlanguage.Untilrecently,childreninthecountryhadtolearnEnglishassoonastheyenteredschool.But,manyhadlittlecontactwithEnglish,especiallythoseinpoorruralareas.Asaresult,manyGhanaianchildrenneverlearnedtoreadandwrite.TheNationalLiteracyAccelerationProgram(NALAP)wasdesignedtohelpdealwiththisproblem.Thecountry-wideprogramopenedin2010.Itteachesreadingandwritinginlocallanguagesduringatwo-yearkindergartenprogramandduringgradesonethroughthree.Theningradefour,childrenbegintostudyinEnglishonly.Safalibaisararelanguagewithabout7,000speakersinseveraltownsinnorthernGhana.Itismainlyaspokenlanguage.AmongSafalibaspeakers,theliteracyrateinEnglishisonlyeightpercent.PublicschoolteachersinnorthernGhanateachreadingandwritinginEnglishandGonja,oneofthemorecommonnativelanguagesinthearea.TheMinistryofEducationprovidesthelocalschoolswithmaterialsinthoselanguages.Safalibahadnocommonwrittenformuntil2003.AresearchteamofGhanaianandAmericaneducatorsisworkingtochangethat.WritinganorallanguagePaulSchaefergrewupinGhanaandworksfortheChristianbasednon-governmentalorganizationGILLBT.ThatstandsforGhanaInstituteofLinguistics,Literacy,andBibleTranslation.Beginningin1998,heandhiswife,JenniferSchaefer,studiedtheSafalibalanguage.TheyworkedtogetherwithSafalibaspeakerstodevelopawaytowritethelanguage.Theyusedthiswrittenlanguageinadultliteracyprogramsandpublishedshortbooksforthestudentstoread.IddiBayayaisthemainSafalibaliteracyteacher.Heisafarmerwhohadafewyearsofprimaryschooleducation.Mr.Bayayaattendedgovernment-supportedclassesinGonjaandlearnedtobealiteracyfacilitatorinthatlanguage.Since2003,Mr.BayayahastaughtanightlyliteracyclassinhisnorthernGhanaianhometown,Mandari.HetrainedseveralotherpeopletoteachSafalibaliteracyinMandari.ThenhebeganliteracyclassesintwootherSafaliba-speakingvillages.Childrenwanttolearn,t
