JamesFenimoreCooperBriefIintroductionWorksContributionsJamesFenimoreCooper(September15,1789–September14,1851)wasaprolificandpopularAmericanwriteroftheearly19thcentury.Heisbestrememberedasanovelistwhowrotenumeroussea-storiesandthehistoricalnovelsknownastheLeatherstockingTales（皮袜子五部曲）,featuringfrontiersmanNattyBumppo.AmonghismostfamousworksistheRomanticnovelTheLastoftheMohicans(最后的莫西干人）,oftenregardedashismasterpiece.JamesFenimoreCooperwasborninBurlington,NewJersey,1789.Shortlyafterhisfirstbirthday,hisfamilymovedtoCooperstown,NewYork,acommunityfoundedbyhisfather.At13,CooperwasenrolledatYale,buthedidnotobtainadegreeduetobeingexpelled.Atage21,hemarriedSusanDeLancey.Theyhadsevenchildren,fiveofwhomlivedtoadulthood.Attheageof30,hebegantowritenovels.hisfirstbooknamedPrecaution《警觉》(1820)In1826CoopermovedhisfamilytoEurope.Whileoverseas,hecontinuedtowrite.HisbookspublishedinParisincludeTheRedRoverandTheWaterWitch—twoofhismanyseastories.In1832heenteredthelistsasapoliticalwriter;inaseriesofletterstotheNational,aParisianjournal,hedefendedtheUnitedStatesagainstastringofchargesbroughtagainstthembytheRevueBritannique.Attheageof44,CooperreturnedtotheUnitedStatesandimmediatelypublishedALettertoMyCountrymen,inwhichhegavehisownversionofthecontroversy争论andsharplycensured责难、责备hiscompatriots同胞fortheirshareinit.Later,HeturnedagainfrompurefictiontothecombinationofartandcontroversyinwhichhehadachieveddistinctionwiththeLittlepageManuscripts(1845–1846).CooperspentthelastyearsofhislifebackinCooperstown.Hediedofdropsy水肿、浮肿onSeptember14,1851,thedaybeforehis62ndbirthday.
