3April2013Lastupdatedat04:00GMTUK'nowhassevensocialclasses'PeopleintheUKnowfitintosevensocialclasses,amajorsurveyconductedbytheBBCsuggests.Itsaysthetraditionalcategoriesofworking,middleandupperclassareoutdated,fitting39%ofpeople.Itfoundanewmodelofsevensocialclassesrangingfromtheeliteatthetoptoa"precariat"-thepoor,precariousproletariat-atthebottom.Morethan161,000peopletookpartintheGreatBritishClassSurvey,thelargeststudyofclassintheUK.Classhastraditionallybeendefinedbyoccupation,wealthandeducation.Butthisresearcharguesthatthisistoosimplistic,suggestingthatclasshasthreedimensions-economic,socialandcultural.TheBBCLabUKstudymeasuredeconomiccapital-income,savings,housevalue-andsocialcapital-thenumberandstatusofpeoplesomeoneknows.Thestudyalsomeasuredculturalcapital,definedastheextentandnatureofculturalinterestsandactivities.Thenewclassesaredefinedas:Elite-themostprivilegedgroupintheUK,distinctfromtheothersixclassesthroughitswealth.ThisgrouphasthehighestlevelsofallthreecapitalsEstablishedmiddleclass-thesecondwealthiest,scoringhighlyonallthreecapitals.Thelargestandmostgregariousgroup,scoringsecondhighestforculturalcapitalTechnicalmiddleclass-asmall,distinctivenewclassgroupwhichisprosperousbutscoreslowforsocialandculturalcapital.DistinguishedbyitssocialisolationandculturalapathyNewaffluentworkers-ayoungclassgroupwhichissociallyandculturallyactive,withmiddlinglevelsofeconomiccapitalTraditionalworkingclass-scoreslowonallformsofcapital,butisnotcompletelydeprived.Itsmembershavereasonablyhighhousevalues,explainedbythisgrouphavingtheoldestaverageageat66Emergentserviceworkers-anew,young,urbangroupwhichisrelativelypoorbuthashighsocialandculturalcapitalPrecariat,orprecariousproletariat-thepoorest,mostdeprivedclass,scoringlowforsocialandculturalcapitalTheresearcherssaidwhiletheelitegrouphadbeenidentifiedbefore,thisisthefirsttimeithadbeenplacedwithinawideranalysisoftheclassstructure,asitwasnormallyputtogetherwithprofessionalsandmanagers.Attheoppositeextremetheysaidthep
