Ride’scriticismofisolationistsisrelevantnotonlytotheWestbutalsototheEastwhereforthegreaterpart,migrantsareincreasinglyunwelcome.ThereasonforthisnearhostilityisnotsomuchthebrandtheorythattheEconomisthasputforthbuttheovergrowingrealisationofthescarcityofresources,especiallyinthewakeoftherecession.RiderightfullycriticisestheWest’scryofan‘immigrationcrisis’.TheWestfeelsthatmigrantsfromtheeastaretakingupjobsthatshouldgotoitspeople.TheVirginiaTechshootoutintheUnitedStatesofAmerica(USA),thekillingofIndianstudentsinAustraliaandindeedtheblogsofstudentswhostudyandhavestudiedinAustraliabringtolighthowstronglytheWestfeelsaboutthis.WesternerstrulybelievethattheyarelosingoutbecauseofAsiansandthisdeepbeliefhastransformedintohatredtowardsAsians.TheForeignMinisterofAustralialastweeksaidthattheattacksonIndiansinAustraliawerenotraciallydirectedandmerelycoincidentalbutevidencebegstodiffer.Itwouldbefarmorebeneficialwerehetobringtolighthowhiscountrygainsfromtheinflowofmigrants.TopUSUniversitiesareonadrivetopickupgraduatesfromtheIndianInstitutesofTechnology(IIT)becausewepowertheirresearch.ThisresearchultimatelygeneratesbigmoneyfirtheWest,whichthensharesitstechnologywiththeEast.ThisisexemplifiedbyPranavMastri’s(anIITgraduate)developmentofSixthSenseTechnologythatwillchangethefaceofdatahandling.Disallowingmigrantswouldmeanthattechnologyandresearchorientedworkforce,whichisparticularlystronginAsia,wouldnothaveaccesstoWesterninfrastructure.Insuchasituation,theentireworldwouldlose.Howeverthishostilityofmigrantsisnotone-sidedanymore.EasterncountrieslikeChinaarebecomingincreasinglyawareoftheneedtoprotecttheireconomiesandtheirpeople’slivelihoodandhavebegunadoptingprotectionistmeasures.SingaporeforinstancehasemployedaforeignworkerlevyinanattempttoreducetheinflowofforeignworkersfromdevelopingcountriessuchasIndiaandSriLanka.ThisprotectionismisnotoutofinherentDarwinianprejudiceastheEconomistsuggestbutmoreofaneedtoachievehealthyandsustainableeconomicgrowthforitscitizens.Nonetheless,Indiansstilllivei
