Thecurrentissueandfulltextarchiveofthisjournalisavailableathttp://www.emerald-library.comThechangingThechanginglogisticalsystemlogisticalofthebuildingmaterialssystemsupplychainHansVoordijk823TilburgUniversity,Tilburg,TheNetherlandsKeywordsLogistics,Supplychain,BuildingmaterialsAbstractThisstudyanalyseshowpolicymeasuresandtechnologicaldevelopmentsaffectthetrade-offsbetweenelementsofthelogisticalsystemofasupplychain.Itisassumedthatthislogisticalsystemconsistsofthefollowingelements:sourcing,production,inventory,transportationandservice.Twocasesofsupplychainsofbuildingmaterialshavebeenanalysed.Thisanalysisresultsinamatrixinwhichtheeffectsofpolicymeasuresandtechnologicaldevelopmentsforthedifferentelementsinthelogisticalsystemofthesesupplychainsareclassified.IntroductionInanumberofEuropeancountries,policymeasuresandtechnologicaldevelopmentshaveresultedinafundamentalrestructuringofsupplychains.Forthatreason,theEuropeanCommissionstartedtheRedefineresearchproject.Oneoftheobjectivesofthisprojectwastoidentifyhowpolicymeasuresandtechnologicaldevelopmentsaffectthelogisticalorganisationofsupplychainsfordifferentindustries.Thebuildingmaterialsindustryanditssupplychainswasoneoftheindustriesanalysed.Thesesupplychainswereanalysedintermsoflogisticalsystemswithtrade-offsbetweenthedifferentelementsofthesesystems(Ballou,1999;Lambertetal.,1998).Inthisstudy,theeffectsofpolicymeasuresandtechnologicaldevelopmentsontheseelementsaresummarisedandclassified.Asthedecisionofonefirminthechainaffectsthedecisionsofanotherfirm,thesupplychainwaschosenastheunitofanalysis.Theresearchdesigncanbedescribedasamultiplecasestudy:severalsupplychainsinthesameindustryareanalysed(Yin,1994).Thestarting-pointfortheselectionofthesesupplychainsweretwosubsectorsoftheDutchmanufacturingsectorofbuildingmaterials:manufacturersofarticlesofconcrete,plasterandcementandmanufacturersofceramictilesandflags.Usingtheconceptofthelogisticalfamily,theseproductgroupsmayprovideinsightsintoothergood
