TheCorrelationbetweentheMediaandHomosexualCultureamongChineseYoungstersCandy0901520WiththerapidexpansionofthemediawhichcontributestotheemergingculturaldiversityinChina,homosexualityhasdrawnamuchhigherattentionthanbefore.Manyscholarshavedonemuchresearchaboutthereasonsforthecoming-into-beingofhomosexualsinChina.However,fewofthemgiveamoredetailedanalysisofhowthemassmediahasinfluencedbothhomosexualandheterosexualpeople.WethereforewillexplorethecorrelationbetweenthemediaandhomosexualcultureamongChineseyoungstersinordertohelpbreaktheisolationofthehomosexual,andhelptheChinesegovernmentplayabetterroleinculturalconstruction.TheChinesesexologistLiYinhe(2009)believesthatbothinnatefactorsandpostnatalfactorsshouldbenotedwhendealingwiththereasons,andshealsoarguesthatsomeacquiredexperienceshaveanevengreaterinfluenceonhomosexuals.ThisisconsistentwithBulter’stheoryofgenderwhichconceivesofitasanelaboratefabrication(inMerkin,2006).Inotherwords,thegenderidentityisnotfixed,butmightbechangedatanytimeundertheeffectsofdiversifiedculturalexchanges.AsGauntlett(1998)pointsout,themassmediaistheprimarymeansforalternativeimagesofsexualitytobedisseminated,becauseinrecentyears,thereisanincreaseinthenumberofthefilmsdealingwiththequestionofhomosexuality,suchastheLanYu(2001)andBrokebackMountain(2005)throughwhichthepublicgraduallybecomeawareoftheexistenceofthehomosexual.Morerecently,manyhomosexualwebpageshaveappearedinChinawhichmainlyprovidearticles,videoclips,literatureworksabouthomosexualactivities,aswellasonlinefriend-makingservice(Lin,2008).Currently,theexposureofhomosexualcultureonbothnetworks,films,andotherformsofmassmediaallcontributestomakehomosexualitylessofatargetofattack,andmoreofanexpressionofrightsandfreedom.Ourresearchusedbothquantitativeandqualitativemethods,namelyquestionnairesdealingwiththeattitudesofheterosexualstowardshomosexualityandinterviewsdesignedforthehomosexualgroups.Thequestionnaireswereabletocoverarelativelybroadscaleofrespondentswithdifferentbackgrounds,whiletheintervi
