well,everybodyintowncantellwhenAmbersonsareoutdrivingafterdark,bythejingle.ThistownneverdidseesomuchstyleasAmbersonsareputtingon,thesedays;andIguessit'sgoingtobeexpensive,becausealotofotherfolks'lltrytokeepupwith'em.TheMajor'swifeandthedaughter'sbeentoEurope,andmywifetellsmesincetheygotbacktheymaketeathereeveryafternoonaboutfiveo'clock,anddrinkit.Seemstomeitwouldgoagainstaperson'sstomach,justbeforesupperlikethat,andanywayteaisn'tfitformuch--notunlessyou'resickorsomething.MywifesaysAmbersonsdon'tmakelettucesaladthewayotherpeopledo;theydon'tchopitupwithsugarandvinegaratall.Theypouroliveoilonitwiththeirvinegar,andtheyhaveitseparate--notalongwiththerestofthemeal.Andtheyeattheseolives,too:greenthingstheyare,somethinglikeahardplum,butafriendofminetoldmetheytastedagooddeallikeabadhickory-nut.Mywifesaysshe'sgoingtobuysome;yougottoeatnineandthenyougettolike'em,shesays.Well,Iwouldn'teatninebadhickory-nutstogettolikethem,andI'mgoingtolettheseolivesalone.Kindofawoman'sdish,anyway,Isuspect,butmosteverybody'llbemakin'astaggertowormthroughnineof'em,nowAmbersonsbrought'emtotown.Yes,sir,therest'lleat'em,whethertheygetsickornot!Lookstomelikesomepeopleinthiscity'dbewillingtogocrazyiftheythoughtthatwouldhelp'emtobeashigh-tonedasAmbersons.OldAleckMinafer--he'sabouttheclosestoldcodgerwegot--hecomeinmyofficetheotherday,andheprettynearhadastroketellin'meabouthisdaughterFanny.SeemsMissIsabelAmberson'sgotsomekindofadog--theycallitaSaintBernard--andFannywasboundtohaveone,too.Well,oldAlecktoldherhedidn'tlikedogsexceptrat-terriers,becausearat-terriercleansupthemice,butshekeptonathim,andfinallyhesaidallrightshecouldhaveone.Then,byGeorge!shesaysAmbersonsboughttheirdog,andyoucan'tgetonewithoutpayingforit:theycostfromfiftytoahundreddollarsup!OldAleckwantedtoknowifIeverheardofanybodybuyin'adogbefore,because,ofcourse,evenaNewfoundlandorasetteryoucanusuallygetsomebodytogiveyouone.Hesayshesawsomesenseinpayin'aniggeradime,orevenaquarter,todrownadogforyou,buttopayoutfiftydollarsandmaybemore--well,sir,hel
