ResearchoftheInternalMechanismofInterlanguageFossilizationAbstract:SincethephenomenonoffossilizationinintelanguageisproposedbySelinkerin1972,ithasdrawnmuchattentionandhasbeenoneoftheobstaclesintheprocessforeignlanguageteachingandlearning.Thispaperattemptstoexpoundstheimplicationofinterlanguagefossilizationandfocusesonpresentingtheinternalmechanismofinterlanguagefossilizationfromfiveaspects,namelythephysiologicalaspect,thepsychologicalaspect,thecognitivemanner,theculturaldifference,andthecognitiveemotion.Keywords:interlanguagefossilization;internalmechanism;SecondLanguageAcquisition(SLA)IntroductionFossilization,orthecessationoflearning,whichwascoinedbySelinker(1972),isrecognizedasawidespreadphenomenoninsecondlanguageacquisitionforlinguistsandlanguagelearnershavebeenawarethatthatitisextremelyrareforthelearnerofaL2toachievefullnative-likecompetence.“InterlanguageisthetermcoinedbySelinker(1972)torefertothesystematicknowledgeofasecondlanguagewhichisindependentofboththelearner’sfirstlanguageandthetargetlanguage.”(ManqiuQian&ZhihongXiao,2010:180)Interlanguagefossilizationisnormalforsecondlanguageacquisition.Ithasdrawnmuchattentionandcommonlyacknowledgedathomeandabroadsinceitisproposed.Domestictheoreticalresearchersinforeignlanguagefieldspendyearsofstudiesinobservationsandresearches,andfindthat:foreignlanguagelearningisakindofskilllearninginessence.“However,‘plateauphenomenon’isthecommonphenomenonandtheruleofskilllearning,thatis,theinitiallearningabilityoflearnersdrawsinalinearincrease,andtoacertainstage,itwillbeinstagnant,thentheabilitycurveshowsflatlyorevenindecline.”(ManqiuQian&ZhihongXiao,2010:180)Theso-calledfossilizationappears,tobemorespecific,itismostlytemporaryasfarasforeignlanguagelearnersareconcernedincolleges.Thefossilizationiscausedbybothexternalreasonsandinternalreasons.“Comparedwithsomeexternalfactors,suchaslanguageenvironment,teachingmethods,andtextbooks,manyscholarsbelievethattheinternalfactors,suchaslearners’physiology,psychology,cognitivemanner,
