focuscurriculumdevelopmentExperienceswithOpenSourceSoftwareEngineeringToolsKalToth,PortlandStateUniversityorsoftwareengineering(SE)andcomputerscience(CS)programsOpensourcetodeliverontheirpromises,theymustgobeyondteachingstu-softwareoffersCSdentsaboutprinciples,processes,models,andstrategiesandofferandSEeducatorsthemrealistic,practicalexperienceaswell.AlthoughindustryhasanopportunitytoFbeenpressingtoincreasetheemphasisonpracticalaspects,manyCSpro-givetheirstudentsgramscontinuetogivestudentsrelativelysimpleproblemsfocusedonse-practical,hands-onlectedcomputingandsoftwareconceptsandtheories.Industrypractices,softwaresuchasrequirementselicitation,test-drivenamasterofsoftwareengineeringdegree.Anengineeringdevelopment,andcodeinspection,arelargelyimportantgoalofboththeseprogramshasexperience.ancillarytocurriculumlearningobjectives.Asbeenforstudentstopracticerealistic,evolu-aresult,studentsrarelygainexperiencewithtionarysoftwaredevelopment.Toaccomplishtheindustry-orientedpracticestheyoftenneedthis,studentsundertakepracticumprojects,aftergraduationtodevelopsoftwareproductstypicallycalled“capstones”attheundergrad-andservicesfortheiremployers.uatelevel.Toaddressthisproblem,Idevelopedaped-Overthelastfewyears,I’vesupportedmanyagogydesignedtoenhanceSEeducation’spracticumandcapstoneprojects;todate,11ofpracticalaspectsbyleveragingopensourcethemhavefocusedonOSSEtools.I’vecometosoftware(OSS)andOSSengineering(OSSE)realizethatSEeducationcanbecontinuouslypractices.Here,IidentifywhateducatorscanimprovedbyengagingfacultyandstudentsindotoexploitOSSEtoolsandcomponents,thediscovery,application,andevolutionofSEandIconfirmsuspicionsthatOSSisnotal-toolsandcomponents.Tosucceed,studentswaysasfreeasadvertisementssuggest.Never-andfacultycanexploitfreelyavailableOSSandtheless,OSSdevelopmentpracticedoesoffermustcollaboratecloselywitheachother,thevaluableanddiverseresourcesandguidanceopensourcecommunity,andindustrysponsors.thatcanyieldqualityandproductivitygainsf
