1582IEEETRANSACTIONSONINDUSTRYAPPLICATIONS,VOL.42,NO.6,NOVEMBER/DECEMBER2006Modeling,Control,andPowerQualityEvaluationofaPEMFuelCell-BasedPowerSupplySystemforResidentialUseM.TanriovenandM.S.Alam,SeniorMember,IEEEAbstract—Theuseoffuel-cell(FC)-basedpowergenerationsystemsisexpectedtobecomemorewidespreadinthenearfutureduetobetterpowerquality,reliability,portability,andecologicalconstraints.TheuseofFCtechnologyforelectricityandheatgenerationforresidentialapplicationsgeneratedtremendousin-terest.ProtonexchangemembraneFCs(PEMFCs)areattractiveforresidentialuseduetoitslowoperatingtemperatureandfaststartupcharacteristics.Thispaperfocusesonthemodeling,control(voltageandactivepowercontrol),andsimulationofPEMFC-basedpowersupplysystemforresidentialapplications.Aproportional–integral(PI)-typevoltageandrealpowercontrollerisusuallyimplementedbycontrollingthefuelinputintoFCstackandadjustingtheinvertermodulationindex.Furthermore,power-qualityissuesareevaluatedbasedonthetransformercon-nectiontypeandharmoniccontentoftheloadforhouseholdappliances.DetailedsimulationsoftwarehasbeendevelopedusingtheMatlabsoftwarepackage.Thetopologychosenforthesimu-lationconsistsofa5-kWPEMFC,asingle-stage-voltage-sourcedpulsewidth-modulationinverterfollowedbyanLCfilterandaFig.1.Cellvoltageversuscurrentdensity.step-uptransformer.ThesimulationresultsillustratethatthevoltageattheloadpointandactivepowerdemandversusloadThemainreasonsforrushingtheFCtechnologytowardvariationscanbeachievedusingthePIcontroller.Thecontrolcommercializationincludefuelavailability,modularityandparametersusedinvolvesinvertermodulationindexandphaseangle.Thepower-qualityevaluationconfirmsthatthebusvoltagecleannessofFC-basedpowergeneration.FCsarecapableofharmonicsmeettheIEEE-519requirementsforallhomeappli-GENERATINGbothelectricalandthermalenergy.Amongances,whicharemodeledbasedonrealmeasuredvalues.However,thevarioustypesofFCs,protonexchangemembraneFCssystemvoltageandcurrentharmonicscanbeaffectedeitherby(PEMFCs)
