EmilyDickinson1830-1886Forheroriginality,range,andemotionaldepth,EmilyDickinsonisnowamongthemostuniversallyadmiredandextensivelystudiedfiguresinEnglishliterature.BIOGRAPHICALESSAYEmilyDickinsonisregardedasoneofthegreatestAmericanpoets.Dickinson'sstraightforwardexaminationofherphilosophicalandreligiousdoubt,herunusualattitudetowardhergender,andherdistinctivestylehaveearnedwidespreadacclaim.EmilyElizabethDickinsonwasbornonDecember10,1830,inAmherst,Massachusetts,whereshelivedherentirelife.Dickinson'sfather,EdwardDickinson,wasaprosperouslawyerwhoservedastreasurerofAmherstCollegeandalsoheldvariouspoliticaloffices.Hermother,EmilyNorcrossDickinson,hasbeendescribedasaquietandfrailwoman.EarlyeducationDickinson'sformaleducationbeganin1835withfouryearsofprimaryschool.ShethenattendedAmherstAcademyfrom1840to1847,beforespendingayearatMountHolyokeFemaleSeminary.Herstudies,includingcoursesinthesciences,literature,history,andphilosophy,werelargelyshapedbyNewEnglandPuritanism.TheteachingsofPuritanismincludedoneall-powerfulGod,analreadydeterminedfate,andtheneedtobepersonallysaved.Dickinson,however,wasunabletoaccepttheteachingsoftheUnitarianchurchattendedbyherfamilyand,despiteherdesiretoexperienceareligiousawakening,remainedagnostic(believingthattheexistenceofGodisunknowable)throughoutherlife.Followingthecompletionofhereducation,Dickinsonlivedinthefamilyhomewithherparentsandyoungersister,Lavinia.Herolderbrother,Austin,andhiswife,Susan,livednextdoor.BeginswritingpoetryAlthoughthedetailsofherlifearevague,scholarsbelievethatDickinsonfirstbeganwritingpoetryseriouslyintheearly1850s.HerotherwisequietlifewashighlightedbybriefvisitstoBoston,Massachusetts;Washington,D.C.;andPhiladelphia,Pennsylvania,intheyearsfrom1851to1855.BiographersspeculatethatduringonestayinPhiladelphiaDickinsonfellinlovewithamarriedminister,theReverendCharlesWadsworth,andthatherdisappointmentinlovecausedherlaterwithdrawalfromsociety.Whilethisandothersuggestionsoftragicromanticattachmentsarelargelyguesswork,iti
