NewYorkChinatownWhenwetalkaboutNewYork,itisnecessarytomentionChinatown.NewYork’sChinatownisthelargestofChinatownsintheUnitedStates.TheyhavethelargestChinesepopulationandcivilizationonthewesternsideofthehemisphere.ChinatownislocatedonthelowerportionofManhattan.Itconsistsoftwosquaremilesofshops,homes,restaurants,andmuchmorefortheChinesecommunity.Thepopulationisestimatedataround70,000to150,000citizens.ThisisthefavoreddestinationforChineseimmigrantscomingtotheUnitedStates.Therearealsocitizensofotherracesandcultureslivingintheareainrecentyearsaswell.ChineseimmigrantsbegancivilizationinChinatownaroundthemiddleoftheeighteenthcentury.Therewereonlysmallnumbersofimmigrantstostartwith.Movingontothemiddleofthenineteenthcentury,evenmoreChineseimmigrantsmovedtoChinatowninNYtosettlewiththeirfamiliesortofindworkonthestreets,fortraders,orforsailors.Chineseminersbegantoarriveindoublednumbersbecauseofthepromised“goldmountain”inCalifornia.Thiswasduringthegoldrushin1940.TheywerehiredtobuildtheCentralPacificRailroadaswellduringtheirimmigrationinthe1950’s.Alotofimmigrantsonlyarrivedtowork,earnmoney,andreturntoChinawithextracash.AsthejobsdecreasedforChineserailroadworkersandminers,theybegantopickupjobsinthetobaccorollingandtextilefactories.Theywerehiredimmediatelyduetotheirabilitytoworkforlowerwagesandlongerhours.ThewhitepopulationmobbedandragedagainsttheChineseworkerswhoweretakingtheirjobs,anddrovethemtolargercities.ThelargercitiesheldmorejobopportunitiesfortheChinese,andtheyblendedinbetterwiththediverseculturesofthelargercities.In1880,thesoutheastsideofNYC,notedastheslumswashometoover300-1,000Chineseimmigrants.ChinatownwaslargelysupportedoftheirownpeopleintheChinesecommunityduetoracialdiscriminationandselfsegregation.Theycreatedastructureinternallywhichconsistedofassociationsofgoverningforthecommunity,businesses,offices,andsuchwhichsuppliedthepeoplewhohealthcare,itemsneededforeverydayliving,food,andofcourse:jobs.Chinatowncontinuedtoincreasethroughouttheendingofthenineteenthcentury.Ne
