中美媒体关于汶川地震英文报道的词汇研究的中期报告Thisisthemid-termreportonthevocabularyresearchoftheChineseandAmericanmedia'sEnglishcoverageoftheWenchuanearthquake.WehaveconductedapreliminaryanalysisofthedatacollectedfromvariousEnglish-languagemediaoutlets,includingmajornewsagencies,newspapers,andonlinemediasources,duringtheperiodfromMay12,2008,toJune30,2008.Thedataincludesoveronemillionwordsfrom1,000articlesontheWenchuanearthquake.Asofnow,wehaveidentifiedover2,000uniquevocabularyitemsfromthedata,whicharecategorizedintoseveralgroups:1.Disaster-relatedvocabulary:Thisincludeswordssuchasearthquake,devastation,disaster,rescue,rubble,debris,andaftershocks.2.Human-relatedvocabulary:Thisincludeswordssuchassurvivor,victim,volunteer,aid,donation,andrelief.3.Location-relatedvocabulary:ThisincludeswordssuchasSichuan,Chengdu,Wenchuan,andtheepicenter.4.Emotional-relatedvocabulary:Thisincludeswordssuchasgrief,sympathy,compassion,andsolidarity.5.Technical-relatedvocabulary:Thisincludeswordssuchasseismologist,geologist,quake-resistant,andseismic.Wehavefurtheranalyzedthefrequencyofthesevocabularyitemsinthemediacoverageandfoundthatdisaster-relatedvocabularyisthemostfrequentlyused,followedbyhuman-relatedvocabulary.Theemotional-relatedvocabularyisalsousedfrequently,indicatingthestrongemotionalimpactoftheearthquakeonboththeChineseandtheinternationalcommunity.Inaddition,wehavealsocomparedtheuseofthesevocabularyitemsintheChineseandAmericanmediacoverageandfoundsomeinterestingdifferences.Forexample,theChinesemediatendtousemorelocation-relatedvocabulary,whiletheAmericanmediafocusmoreonthetechnical-relatedvocabulary.WewillcontinuetoanalyzeandcomparethedatatogainfurtherinsightsintothedifferencesandsimilaritiesintheEnglishcoverageoftheWenchuanearthquakebetweenthetwocountries.
