Chapter13ThePositionofTranslatedLiteraturewithintheLiteraryPolysystemⅠIdeasofPolysystemTranslatedworksdocorrelateinatleasttwoways:(a)inthewaytheirsourcetextsareselectedbythetargetliterature:correlatablewiththehomeco-systemsofthetargetliterature(b)Inthewaytheyadoptspecificnorms,behaviors,andpolicies-intheiruseoftheliteraryrepertoire:resultfromtheirrelationswiththeotherhomeco-systemsⅡThecentralPositionofTranslatedLiteraturefulfilltheneedofayoungerliteraturetoputintouseitsnewlyfoundedtongueforasmanyliterarytypesaspossiblemakeitserviceableasaliterarylanguageandusefulforitsmergingpublicresourcesofestablishedliteraturesarelimited,positionwithinalargerliteraryhierarchyisgenerallyperipheral.suchliteraturesoftendonotdevelopthesamefullrangeofliteraryactivitiesobservableinadjacentlargerliteratures(whichmaycreateafeelingthattheyareindispensable).PeripheralliteraturesintheWesternHemispheretendtobeidenticalwiththeliteraturesofsmallernations.Withinagroupofrelatablenationalliteratures,hierarchicalrelationshavebeenestablishedsincetheverybeginningsoftheseliteratures.(eg.TheliteraturesofEurope)Withinthis(macro-)polysystem,peripheralliteraturesweremodeleduponanexteriorliterature.(TLisamajorchannelofrenovatingrepertoire,andasourceofreshufflingandsupplyingalternatives.)strongerliteraturesmayadoptnoveltiesfromsomeperipherywithintheirindigenousborders,“weak”literaturesoftendependonimportalone.Atsomehistoricalmoments,establishedmodelsarenolongertenableforayoungergeneration,noitemintheindigenousstockistakentobeacceptable,turningpointsorliterary“vacuum”occurs,andtranslatedliteraturemayconsequentlyassumeacentralposition,whethertheyarestrongorweakliteratures.ThankYou!
