AnExtendedCAPFiletoSupportHighPerformanceEmbeddedJavaJESSEVANBEURDENGREGKNOWLESGRAHAMBIGNELLEmbeddedSystemsLaboratory,SchoolofEngineeringFlindersUniversityofSouthAustraliaPOBox2100Adelaide5001,SouthAustraliaAUSTRALIAAbstract:-ThefundamentalsecurityfeaturesinherentinJavamakeitanattractiveplatformforembeddedsystemswhensecurityisaprimaryconcern.StandardJavaishowevertooresourceheavytobeconsideredaseriouscontenderintheembeddedmarket.TheJava2MicroEdition(J2ME)Connected,LimitedDeviceConfiguration(CLDC),andJavaCardaretwolightweightJavaplatformsdesignedspecificallyforuseinembeddedapplications.ThispaperdescribesthefirstpartofaprojecttodevelopahighlyoptimisedJavaCardandJ2MEcompatiblemicroprocessorthatcanexecuteallJavainstructionsnativelyinhardware.WehavedevelopedanemulatoroftheJavaCardvirtualmachine(JCVM),andoptimisationstotheJavaCardpackagingsystem(CAPfiles).Theseoptimisationsgivespeedincreasesintheresolutionofdatalocatedinexternalpackages.WehaveusedtheemulatortoformalisetheJavaCardinstructionsinthecontextofouroptimisations,andinthispaperwewillshowhowthecomplexJCVMinstructionssuchasinvokevirtualcanbeimplemented.Throughutilisingtheoptimisationsandformalisationsdevelopedinthisstageoftheproject,wecandesignahighperformance,minimumoverheadmicroprocessorspecificallysuitedtoembeddedJava.Key-words:-JavaCard,EmbeddedJava,MicroprocessorArchitecture.1IntroductionAsmartcardisamicroprocessorbasedsystemthatisembeddedintoaplasticcard,similartoacreditcard.Itdependsonacardreadingdeviceforitspowerduringoperation,andstorespersistentdatainnon-volatilememorysuchasEEPROM.Asmartcardcanstoreinformationsecurelybyrestrictingaccesstoonlytrustedsources,andhasbeenproventobemorereliablethanamagneticstripecard[7].TheJava2MicroEdition(J2ME)Connected,LimitedDeviceConfiguration(CLDC)standardisaminimumfootprintJavaplatform,designedforsmall,resourceconstrained,networkeddevicesrequiringlowpowerconsumptionandlessthanhalfamegabyteofmemory.Mobilephones,low-endpersonaldigitalassistants,andpointofsa
