PovertyofNowadaysAmericaPovertyisastateofprivationorlackoftheusualorsociallyacceptableamountofmoneyormaterialpossessions.AccordingtotheU.S.CensusBureaudatareleasedTuesdaySeptember13,2011,thenation'spovertyrateroseto15.1%(46.2million)in2010,upfrom14.3%(approximately43.6million)in2009andtoitshighestlevelsince1993.In2008,13.2%(39.8million)Americanslivedinrelativepoverty.In2000,thepovertyrateforindividualswas12.2%andforfamilieswas9.3%.ThepovertyguidelinefiguresarenotthefigurestheCensusBureauusestocalculatethenumberofpoorpersons.ThefiguresthattheCensusBureauusesarethepovertythresholds.TheCensusBureauprovidesanexplanationofthedifferencebetweenpovertythresholdsandguidelines.TheCensusBureauusesasetofmoneyincomethresholdsthatvarybyfamilysizeandcompositiontodeterminewhoisinpoverty.The2010figureforafamilyof4withnochildrenunder18yearsofageis$22,541,whilethefigureforafamilyof4with2childrenunder18is$22,162.Forcomparison,the2011HHSpovertyguidelineforafamilyof4is$22,350.Inadditiontofamilystatus,race/ethnicityandagealsocorrelatewithhighpovertyratesintheUnitedStates.Althoughdataregardingraceandpovertyaremoreextensivelypublishedandcrosstabulatedthefamilystatuscorrelationisbyfarthestrongest.AccordingtotheUSCensus,in20075.8%ofallpeopleinmarriedfamilieslivedinpoverty,asdid26.6%ofallpersonsinsingleparenthouseholdsand19.1%ofallpersonslivingalone.Morethan75%ofallpoorhouseholdsareheadedbywomen(2012).TheOrganizationforEconomicCo-operationandDevelopment(OECD)usesadifferentmeasureforpovertyanddeclaredin2008thatchildpovertyintheUSis20%andpovertyamongtheelderlyis23%.Thenon-profitadvocacygroupFeedingAmericahasreleasedastudy(May2009)basedon2005–2007datafromtheU.S.CensusBureauandtheAgricultureDepartment,whichclaimsthat3.5millionchildrenundertheageof5areatriskofhungerintheUnitedStates.Thestudyclaimsthatin11states,Louisiana,whichhasthehighestrate,followedbyNorthCarolina,Ohio,Kentucky,Texas,NewMexico,Kansas,SouthCarolina,Tennessee,IdahoandArkansas,morethan20percentofchildrenunder5areallegedlyatris
