Note-takinginInterpretingI.NecessityofLearningNote-takingThisisparticularlytrueincaseswherethespeakerabruptlyreferstoalongseriesoffiguresoralonglistofnamesandplaces.Itisobviousthat,withoutthehelpofnotes,onecanhardlyavoidmisinterpretingorleavingoutimportantinformation.Tosupplementshort-termmemoryandreducetheburdenofthebrain,itisnecessarytoresorttonotes.Nothingbutnotescanhelpaninterpreterovercomethelimitationofhumanmemory.II.SuggestedWaystoTakeNotesAslongastheoriginalspeechcanberecalledthroughthenotes,thenumberofwordsshouldbereducedtoaminimum.Itisalsonecessarytopointoutthataninterpretershouldtryhis/herbesttorememberthebeginningandtheendofaspeech.Itisquitelikelythatwhenalongspeechcomestoanend,theinterpreterfailstorecallhowthespeakerbeganorendedhis/herspeech.Transitionalwordsorphrasessuchas“but”,“so”,“if”and“aslongas”areofspecialimportanceinindicatingthelogicalrelationshipbetweendifferentsensegroupsandhelpinginterpretersrememberwhathasbeensaid.Therefore,theyshouldbejotteddowncarefully.Inordertofacilitatenote-taking,wemightaswellusesomesimplewordstostandforvariousgroupsoftransitionalexpressions.Forexample,wemaywrite“if”tostandforallconditionalexpressionssuchas“solongas”,“onconditionthat”,“provided/providingthat”and“incase”;“tho”forallconcessiveexpressionssuchas“although”,“though”,“eventhough”,“while”“inspiteof”and“despite”;“to”forallexpressionsofpurposesuchas“soasto”,“inorderto/that”and“sothat”;“due”forallexpressionsofcausesuchas“because”,“as”,“since”,“for”,“forthisreason”,“nowthat”,“owingto”and“thanksto”;“so”forallexpressionsofresultsuchas“thus”,“therefore”,“hence”,“asaresultof”and“consequently”;and“but”foralltransitionalexpressionslike“nevertheless”,“still”,“however”,“yet”,“evenso”,“onthecontrary”and“ontheotherhand”.III.SuggestedFormatsforNote-takingIV.SuggestedSymbolsandAbbreviationstoBeUsedinNote-TakingPunctuationMarksTelecommunicationsconstituteathirdmajorsourceofabbreviations.Thereareanumberofspecialrulestofollowinformingabbreviationsusedintelecommunications.Note-t
